- a region of lakes and mountains in Cumbria, north-west England. It contains the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike, and the largest lake, Windermere. Other lakes include Ullswater and Derwentwater. The area is associated with the Lake Poets, who lived there and wrote about it. It was later the home of the writers John Ruskin and Beatrix Potter. Its beautiful scenery is very popular with tourists, and it was made a national park in 1951.
