the Mersey beat /ðə ˈmɜːzi biːt/ /ðə ˈmɜːrzi biːt/ (also the Mersey sound) - the name used to describe a style of pop music which was created and played by a number of groups from Liverpool in the first half of the 1960s, and which became very popular all over the world.
