- a novel (1988) by Salman Rushdie about the religion of Islam. Some Muslims found it very offensive. The Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran declared that Rushdie should be killed, and public protests against the book took place in Britain and many other countries. As a result Rushdie was forced to live for ten years under police protection at a secret address.
