- a large, beautiful valley in the northern part of the US state of Virginia, between the Allegheny Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was used by many Americans when they moved west, and several Civil War battles were fought there because it supplied food for the Confederate forces. The Shenandoah River flows through it and is the subject of the folk song Shenandoah, which begins: ‘Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you, Away, you rolling river.’ The Shenandoah National Park was established in 1926.
