the Short Parliament

- the first of two parliaments set up by the English king Charles I in 1640 when he needed the legal power of Parliament to raise money for a war against Scotland. When the Members of Parliament refused to support the king he dismissed the parliament. It was replaced later in the same year by the Long Parliament.
