- a US government organization that was responsible for providing information about the US to other countries of the world, e.g. through libraries and cultural programmes. It also ran the Fulbright scholarship programme and advised the National Security Council on what other countries think of US policies. The USIA was established in 1948 and became part of the State Department in 1999.
