the Waverley novels
/ðə ˈweɪvəli nɒvlz/
/ðə ˈweɪvərli nɑːvlz/
- the name given to the novels of Sir Walter Scott because he said at the beginning of them that they were written 'by the author of Waverley' and did not give his name. The first of them (itself called Waverley) was published in 1814, and it was not until 1827 that Scott announced publicly that he was in fact the author of the novels.
