- (1879-1961) an English conductor who established two of the great London orchestras, the London Philharmonic and the Royal Philharmonic, and helped to make the British music of his time, especially the music of his friend Delius, more popular. He was also famous for making intelligent, funny and sometimes unkind remarks. He was made a knight in 1916.
