- a US state on the Atlantic coast, also called the Old Dominion. Its largest city is Virginia Beach, and the capital city is Richmond. It was the first permanent English colony in North America and was named after the 'Virgin Queen', Elizabeth I. It was one of the original thirteen colonies, and the American Revolution was ended by the Battle of Yorktown in Virginia. Richmond became the capital of the Confederate States and the Civil War ended at Appomattox Court House. Eight presidents were born in Virginia, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Woodrow Wilson. Local products include tobacco and electrical equipment. Among the tourist attractions are Williamsburg, Mount Vernon and Monticello.
