  1. (1882-1941) an English writer of novels. She is well known for the experimental style of many of her books. She was one of the first writers to use the 'stream of consciousness, a way of describing a person's thoughts and feelings as a flow of ideas as the person would have experienced them, without using the usual methods of description. She was a member of the Bloomsbury Group and is considered an important early writer about feminism (= the idea that women should have the same rights and opportunities as men).
