- Wystan Hugh Auden (1907-73) an English poet who wrote poems of many different types, often using traditional forms of verse but with modern language. He also wrote the words for operas and a famous publicity film for the Post Office. In the 1930s, when he wrote some of his best poems, he was a leading member of a group of left-wing writers. Many of his most famous poems are in the collection Another Time (1940). In 1946 he became a US citizen and his later poetry became more religious. His work has had a strong influence on later 20th-century poetry.
