William Golding

- (1911-93) an English writer of novels. He is best known for his first novel, The Lord of the Flies (1954). Like many of his other works, it is concerned with human cruelty. He won the Booker Prize for the novel Rites of Passage (1980), and the Nobel Prize for literature in 1983. He was made a knight in 1988.
