  1. (1863-1951) a very rich American who owned newspapers, magazines, radio stations and two film companies. He used yellow journalism in his newspapers to increase their sales. His New York Journal competed fiercely in the 1890s with the New York World, owned by Joseph Pulitzer, and both encouraged the Spanish-American War in order to help sales. Hearst built the castle of San Simeon as his home in California.
