Yerkes Observatory

- the observatory (= a building from which to study the stars, weather, etc.) of the University of Chicago in the US. It was built in 1892 at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, with money given by Charles Yerkes. It contains the world's largest refracting telescope (= an instrument that uses light rays to make distant objects appear much larger).
