- (c. 1852-1903) the popular name of Martha Jane Burke, a woman who became famous in America's Wild West for her skill at riding and shooting. She dressed like a man and said she would bring calamity (= great harm) to anyone who made her angry or tried to love her. She was well known in Deadwood, South Dakota, in the 1870s and was a friend or lover of Wild Bill Hickok.
