[uncountable]- a style of 18th-century furniture, based on the designs of Thomas Chippendale. His book of designs, The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director (1754), spread the English rococo (= highly decorated) style to furniture makers outside Britain. A lot of the furniture made in America between 1755 and 1790 became known as Chippendale.
