Alexander Pope /ˌælɪɡzɑːndə ˈpəʊp/ /ˌælɪɡzændər ˈpəʊp/ - (1688-1744) an English poet, well known for his humour and intelligence. He is considered the greatest poet of the Augustan Age. He gained his reputation as a major writer by translating Homer's Iliad (1715-20) and Odyssey (1725-6), but is now better known for his satirical poems such as The Rape of the Lock and An Epistle to Dr Arbuthnot (1735) which made fun of the writers and fashionable people of the period. 亚历山大·波普（Alexander Pope）：（1688-1744）英国诗人，以幽默和机智着称。他被认为是奥古斯都时代最伟大的诗人。他通过翻译荷马的《伊利亚特》（1715-20）和《奥德赛》（1725-6）而获得了主要作家的声誉，但是现在他的讽刺诗如《锁的强奸》和《给阿布诺特博士的书信》（1735）而闻名。取笑了当时的作家和时尚人士。“The proper study of mankind is man.”
