David Livingstone

- (1813-73) a Scottish explorer and missionary (= person sent to teach the Christian religion). He became famous through his travels in Africa, and was the first European to see the Victoria Falls in 1855. In the late 1860s he was thought to be lost while trying to find the source of the River Nile. The journalist Henry Morton Stanley went to look for him and found him at Ujiji in 1871. Livingstone died in Africa but his body was brought back to England and buried in Westminster Abbey.
