- David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) an English writer of novels, short stories and poetry. His father was a miner and this background is sometimes described in his stories. His novels include Sons and Lovers (1913), The Rainbow (1915) and Women in Love (1920). A common theme in his writing is the importance of free emotional and sexual expression, and many of his books were originally considered to be obscene (= offensive or disgusting). His most famous novel, Lady Chatterley's Lover, was not published in full in Britain until 1960. Lawrence was also an important modern poet, and his collected poems were published in 1928.
