Edmund Burke

- (1729-97) a British Whig politician and writer, born in Ireland. He was a Member of Parliament (1765-94) but is best remembered for speaking and writing in favour of American independence and the rights of Irish Catholics. In his best-known book, Reflections of the Revolution in France (1790), he argued against the more extreme acts of the French Revolution.
