Edmund Campion

- (1540-81) an English Catholic martyr (= a person who is killed because of their religious beliefs) in the time of Queen Elizabeth I. He joined the Jesuits, a branch of the Roman Catholic Church, and performed secret religious services for Catholics in Britain. He was caught and hanged for treason (= the crime of betraying one's country). The Pope made him a saint in 1970.
