Edward Hopper

- (1882-1967) a US painter and printmaker best known for his pictures of American city scenes and of the countryside and coast of New England. These often showed people alone in streets or buildings with a strange light. They include Early Sunday Morning (1930) and Nighthawks (1942), a picture of customers in an all-night diner. His wife, the painter and Hopper's model, Josephine Nivison, left his work to the Whitney Museum of American Art.
