- (1239-1307) the king of England from 1272 to 1307, the eldest son of Henry III. He spent a lot of time trying to control Wales and Scotland, fighting, among others, William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. As a result he was called the 'Hammer of the Scots'. In 1296 he brought the Stone of Scone to England. Although he was the first Norman king of England called Edward, there were two King Edwards before the Conquest.
