- (1872-1913) an English suffragette who died when she threw herself in front of the king's horse during the Derby as a protest. She had been involved in the campaign for votes for women for eight years, and had been in prison several times for protests that included throwing stones and causing fires. After her death, her body was carried through London by 2 000 suffragettes.
