(1815-82) an English author of many novels, mainly about middle-class society in Victorian England. His series of six novels (1855-67) set in the imaginary county of Barsetshire are mainly about the priests and other church officials connected with a cathedral, and include the novel Barchester Towers. Another series of six novels (1864-80) involves the Palliser family and is mainly about politics and society in London.
