Fountains Abbey

- a ruined abbey (= religious building) near Ripon in north-east England. It was built in 1132 and destroyed in the 16th century during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Many people visit the ruins, which have been well preserved in attractive countryside. They were made a World Heritage Site in 1986.
