- Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945) a Democratic politician who became the 32nd US President (1933-45), also known informally as FDR, and the only one to be elected four times. From 1921 he suffered from polio (= a serious disease affecting the nervous system) and could hardly walk without help. Before becoming President he was Governor of New York (1929-33). As President, he introduced his New Deal programme which helped the US to recover from the Great Depression. Roosevelt was a cheerful man who gave Americans confidence with his fireside chats on radio. Before the US entered the Second World War, he supported Britain with the Lend-Lease plan. He died while President just before the war ended.
