- (1817-95) a US slave who escaped in 1838, wrote the story of his life as a slave and later went to England, where friends gave him enough money to return to America and buy his freedom. He became the leading African American working to end the system of slavery and was the US government's representative to Haiti from 1889 to 1891. He also established the North Star newspaper in Rochester, New York.
