- a US company that produces electrical products and aircraft engines, and is involved in many other business activities. It is one of the largest companies in the world and was formed in 1892 when Thomas Edison's company, Edison General Electric, joined with Thomson-Houston Electric. It is the only one of the 12 original companies on the Dow Jones Index that still remains. Ronald Reagan used to present The General Electric Theater on television in the 1950s.
