George I

/ˌdʒɔːrdʒ ðə ˈfɜːrst/
- (1660-1727) king of Great Britain and Ireland (1714-27). He was the first of the Hanoverian kings and came to Britain from Germany on the death of Queen Anne. He was not popular in Britain, mainly because he did not learn to speak English, and because he arrived with two German lovers who were not liked by the British people. He did not get involved in British politics, leaving most decisions to the Cabinet, which became much more important during his time as king.
