- (1844-89) an English Jesuit priest who wrote poems about religious ideas and the beauty of nature, using a form of verse which he called 'sprung rhythm'. His best-known works are The Wreck of the Deutschland, Pied Beauty and Windhover. His poems were first published after his death by his friend Robert Bridges in 1918 and influenced later poets, including W H Auden and Dylan Thomas.
