- Julius Robert Oppenheimer (1904-67) the scientist in charge of the US Manhattan Project (1942-5) which built the first atomic bomb. After the Second World War, Oppenheimer directed the Institute for Advanced Study. In the 1950s he opposed the creation of the hydrogen bomb, and because he was thought to hold left-wing opinions he was not allowed to work on government research projects for a time.
