- a historical work in six books (1776-88) written by the English historian Edward Gibbon. It covers the history of Europe from Rome in the first century AD to the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Its full title is The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, but it is usually referred to simply as Gibbon's Decline and Fall
