- (1836-1910) a US painter well known especially for his watercolours. They express the strong American spirit and influenced other US painters at the end of the 19th century. He painted scenes of American life, landscapes and scenes of the sea, especially in New England and Florida, such as Cannon Rock (1895) and The Gulf Stream (1899). Early in his career he drew scenes of the Civil War for the magazine Harper's Weekly.
