- (1872-1933) the 30th US President (1923-9). He was known for his honesty and called 'Silent Cal' because he used few words when speaking. He was a Republican, and had previously been Governor of Massachusetts (1919-20) and US Vice-President (1921-3). The US economy did well under Coolidge, and he signed the Kellogg Pact to encourage international peace.
